The wall that was burned, broken, and laughed at was standing again. The gates were hung, the watch was set, and for the first time in a hundred years the city was secure. This is the mountaintop. This is the verse you would circle and underline in your Bible.

If it were us, this is exactly where we would plan the celebration — banners up, people in the square, a day nobody would forget. But that is not the first thing Nehemiah does. He doesn’t throw a party. He doesn’t carve his own name into the wall he just built. The very first thing Nehemiah does is read a list of names.

That old register is what Nehemiah reaches for at the finish line. Before the joy, he remembers — the remembering comes first. Celebration is a good and right thing, but it has to sit on top of memory, because people who forget where they came from lose the meaning of where they are.

What victory or blessing are you enjoying right now that you’ve never really stopped to remember?

God is basically saying, “Don’t make this complicated.” Teaching your kids about the Lord isn’t just a Sunday thing. It’s an everyday thing. It’s life-on-life.

At the table. In the car. At bedtime. On the way to school. Faith is meant to be woven into normal conversation. Not forced. Not awkward. Just natural.
Proverbs says training a child sets direction. The psalmist says we tell the next generation about the mighty works of God. Paul said he encouraged believers like a father encourages his children. Obedience is what you do. Honor is how you do it. You can obey and still be disrespectful. God calls us to more than compliance – He calls us to honor.

Paul reaches all the way back to the Ten Commandments and reminds us that honoring parents comes with a promise. Not because parents are flawless, but because God’s authority flows through them. When we honor them, we honor Him.

This doesn’t mean life will be easy. It doesn’t mean you’ll never struggle. It means you’re aligning yourself with God’s design – and that always brings blessing. In a culture that pushes independence and dismisses authority, this command calls us to be different. To respect. To appreciate. To care, especially as parents age.

When Scripture calls children to obey their parents "in the Lord," it establishes a foundational principle: submission to authority reflects our submission to God. This isn't blind compliance, but faith-filled trust that God's ways lead to blessing. The promise a"that it may be well with thee" reveals God's heart. He fed about 150 people every single day, not counting the visitors from the surrounding nations. And here's the part you can't miss: he paid for all of it himself. He had a food allowance coming to him. He had every right to send the bill to the people. But he didn't. He opened his table and covered the cost.

And notice why. Because "the bondage was heavy upon this people." Nehemiah saw the burden the people were already carrying, and the last thing he was going to do was add to it. A selfish leader asks, "What can these people do for me?" A godly leader asks, "What can I do for these people?"

You don't have to be a governor to be generous. You don't have to set a table for 150 to open your hands. Generosity isn't about how much you have — it's about how tightly you hold on to it. God has not blessed you so you can live for yourself; He has blessed you so you can be a blessing to somebody else. And that blessing doesn't always come with a price tag — sometimes it's your home, your time, a shared meal, or just being available when somebody's hurting.

Are you holding on to things with a clenched fist or an open hand?

"Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work."

Don't miss the contrast. In verse 15 the former governors leaned on the people. In verse 16 Nehemiah is with the people, out on the wall. The other governors put the people to work for them; Nehemiah went to work alongside them.

And again — he didn't have to. As governor he had every right to step back and say, "I prayed. I planned. I organized. Let somebody else swing the hammer now." But that's not the kind of man he was. The higher Nehemiah rose, the harder Nehemiah worked. When the men on that wall looked up and saw the governor himself with dust on his hands and sweat on his brow, it did something to them. It's hard to complain about the work when the man in charge is working harder than you are. Hard work is contagious.

We live in a generation that keeps saying, "We need revival. We need somebody to do something." Maybe the way that gets accomplished starts with you. You do what needs to be done. You work hard — and others will follow.

Reflect:

· Where have you been waiting for "somebody" to step up — when God may be wanting you to pick up the hammer?

But the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God."

Every governor before Nehemiah leaned on the people. They took money and food to support themselves, and nobody thought twice about it. It was legal. It was expected. It was simply how things were done. But right in the middle of all that, Nehemiah draws a line in the sand with four of the most powerful words a leader can ever say: "But so did not I."

What everybody is doing has never once made a wrong thing right. Not, "I didn't need it." But, "because of the fear of God."That is the root underneath everything else we will see this week. Remember, the fear of God isn't terror — it's awe. It's not running from God; it's standing before Him in reverence, so aware of who He is that you can't bring yourself to sin against Him.

Reflect:

Where in your life are you tempted to do something simply because "everybody does it"?
Is your standard the people around you, or the God above you?

You are deeply loved by God.

In Ephesians 1, Paul reminds us that God's plan for us began long before we were born.
His love isn't based on what we’ve done or how worthy we feel. It’s rooted in who He is.
God’s love is not something you have to earn. It’s not about performance or proving yourself. It’s a gift. A free and generous expression of His grace.

Take a moment and let that sink in. You are loved by the Creator of the universe. You don’t have to strive for God’s love. You already have it.

Rest in that love and let it shape how you live.
