Wednesday - What to Give Thanks For

Ephesians 5:20 – “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;”

Habakkuk 3:17–18 – “Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the Lord. I will joy in the God of my salvation.”

Habakkuk describes total loss. Nothing was growing. Nothing was producing. Nothing was going right. Yet he makes this bold, powerful choice — “I will rejoice in the Lord.”

He wasn’t thankful for the loss — he was thankful in the loss. His gratitude wasn’t tied to blessings; it was tied to God’s character.

That’s exactly what Paul echoes in Ephesians 5:20. We give thanks for all things because we trust the God who rules over all things. When life feels uncertain, gratitude anchors your heart in the truth that God is still good, still present, still working, and still worthy of praise.
