Thursday - Asking Boldly

Nehemiah 2:4–8 “Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven. And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it. And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time. Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah; And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace… and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.”

When the king asked, “For what dost thou make request?” — that was the moment.

This is what Nehemiah had been praying toward for four months.

And he didn’t hesitate.

He didn’t ask for something small.

He asked to rebuild Jerusalem.

Then he asked for protection.

Then he asked for resources to finish the job.

That’s bold.

But it wasn’t careless. He had already prayed it through. When the door opened, he knew exactly what needed to be said.

That’s what Jesus meant when He said, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you” (Matthew 7:7–11).

And Paul echoes it: “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (Philippians 4:6–7).

Nehemiah did exactly that.

Sometimes we pray safe prayers. We soften them. We say, “Lord, just help this go okay,” instead of bringing the real burden to Him.

But when God opens a door, you don’t have to hold back.

Ask clearly.
Ask specifically.

Because while you were praying, God was already working.
