Monday - Facing Honest Reality

Nehemiah 2:17
“Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.”

Psalm 139:23–24
“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

Nehemiah began with honesty.

He looked at the people and said, “You see the distress that we are in.”

Before anything could be rebuilt, someone had to acknowledge the reality of the problem. The same is true in our spiritual lives. Restoration always begins with honesty.

Sometimes we slowly drift spiritually. Prayer becomes inconsistent. Time in God’s Word becomes occasional. Our passion for the Lord cools. But because it happens gradually, it begins to feel normal.

Like the people of Jerusalem, we can learn to live with the ruins.

That is why David prayed, “Search me, O God.” He invited God to reveal what he might not see himself.

Today, ask the Lord to search your heart. Honest reality is not meant to discourage you. It is the starting point for God’s rebuilding work.
