Tuesday - God's Word Nourishes Spiritual Growth

I Peter 2:2 - “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.”
I have two kids, a three year old girl and a one year old boy, and one thing I have learned very quickly is this. No one has to teach a baby how to be hungry.
When my one year old is hungry, he does not politely hint at it. He lets us know. And when it is time to eat, nothing else will satisfy him. You can distract him for a moment, but eventually only milk will do.
But as my kids get older, I am also learning something else. Just because something is good for them does not mean they always want it. My three-year-old does not always want vegetables. She would much rather eat snacks or sweets. But as a parent, I know she needs vegetables if she is going to grow strong and healthy.
So even when she does not crave them, I still put them on her plate.
Peter says our spiritual lives are supposed to work the same way.
Just like a baby cannot grow without nourishment, a Christian cannot grow without God’s Word. We do not mature spiritually by accident. We do not grow just because we attend church or have good intentions. Spiritual growth requires spiritual nourishment.
God’s Word feeds you and nourishes you, even on the days you do not feel hungry for it.
If you do not feel a strong desire for Scripture right now, do not be discouraged. Hunger grows with use. Just like with a child, regular feeding develops a healthy appetite. The more you take in God’s Word, the more you will desire it and the more you will grow.
