Mountain-Moving Prayer

Mark 11:20-26 – “And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. 21 And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away. 22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. 23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. 24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. 25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. 26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.”
Have you ever faced a challenge so overwhelming that it felt like an immovable mountain? Maybe it was a financial crisis, a broken relationship, a health scare, or an impossible dream. We all encounter moments when the odds seem stacked against us, when we wonder if things will ever change.

In those moments, Jesus gives us an incredible promise—one that can transform how we face life's biggest obstacles. In Mark 11, He tells His disciples that faith-filled prayer has the power to move mountains. Think about that! The impossible can become possible when we learn to trust God completely.

This chapter is filled with some of the most powerful moments in Jesus’ ministry. We see His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, His cleansing of the temple, His confrontation with religious leaders, and tucked within these events, one of the greatest teachings on prayer in the entire Bible.

Jesus is marching toward the most difficult moment in history—the cross. He is about to be betrayed, arrested, and crucified. Yet, in the midst of this, He takes time to teach His disciples about the power of faith-filled prayer. Why? Because He wants them—and us—to understand that prayer is not just a religious routine. It is the key to overcoming the impossible.

In Mark 11:20-26, Jesus gives His disciples a radical promise about prayer and faith. Let’s zero in on verse 23: “For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.”

Did you catch that? Jesus says that with faith, we can move mountains! What an incredible promise. Throughout the Bible, mountains often symbolize the impossible—situations too big for us to handle alone. And Jesus is making it clear: when we face difficulties that feel immovable, the way forward is through faith and prayer.

So, how do we experience this kind of mountain-moving prayer? Jesus lays out three essentials.

Have Faith in God.

The first key to effective prayer is simple: have faith in God.

When Peter pointed out the withered fig tree—the same tree Jesus had cursed the day before—Jesus responded with a profound statement: “Have faith in God.” Before He talks about moving mountains, He establishes the foundation: faith. Because without faith, our prayers are powerless.

But notice Jesus doesn’t just say, “Have faith.” He says, “Have faith in God.” There’s a big difference. The world talks about faith as if it’s some mystical force or positive energy. People say, “Just believe,” as if believing in yourself is enough. But biblical faith isn’t about self-confidence. It’s about God-confidence. It’s not about how big our faith is—it’s about how big our God is.

Faith means surrendering completely to God, trusting that He is bigger than any obstacle we face. A simple way to remember it? F.A.I.T.H. – Forsaking All, I Trust Him.

What mountain are you facing today? A financial burden? A broken relationship? A struggle with fear or doubt? Whatever it is, Jesus’ words are for you: “Have faith in God.”

Present Your Needs in Prayer

Jesus makes it clear that mountains don’t move just because we worry about them. They move when we pray.

“Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” (Mark 11:24)

Prayer is the key to unlocking God’s power.  But let’s be honest—when life gets overwhelming, prayer is often the first thing to go. We try to handle things on our own, and when that fails, we turn to God as a last resort. But Jesus teaches the opposite. Prayer should be our first response, not our last resort.

Some people wonder, “If God already knows what I need, why do I need to ask?” Because that’s how God designed faith to work! Scripture is clear: there are blessings we will never receive if we do not ask. James 4:2 puts it bluntly: “Ye have not, because ye ask not.”

God moves in response to our prayers. That’s why Jesus prayed constantly. In fact, the Bible records 25 different prayers of Jesus, showing us that prayer wasn’t just part of His life—it was His lifeline. If the Son of God needed to pray, how much more do we?

So, whatever is weighing on your heart today—bring it to God. Don’t just wish things would change—pray boldly, believe fully, and trust completely.

Live with a Heart of Forgiveness

The final key to effective prayer might surprise you. Jesus connects faith and forgiveness in a way we can’t ignore:

“And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” (Mark 11:25)

In other words, you can’t have a powerful prayer life while holding on to bitterness. Unforgiveness puts up a barrier between us and God. Psalm 66:18 says, “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.”

Imagine trying to drive with the parking brake on. You press the gas, but the car won’t move like it should. That’s what unconfessed sin and unforgiveness do to our spiritual lives. They hold us back from experiencing the power of God.

Jesus teaches that faith and forgiveness go hand in hand. We can’t expect God to move mountains in our lives while we refuse to release the burdens of bitterness and sin.

So, what is God asking you to release today? Is there someone you need to forgive? A grudge you need to let go of? Don’t let anything stand in the way of what God wants to do in your life. Surrender it to Him and watch Him work.

Believe for the Impossible

What mountain are you facing today?

Jesus has given us the blueprint for breakthrough. It starts with faith—trusting in His power. It continues with prayer—bringing every need before Him. And it’s sustained by forgiveness—keeping our hearts clean before God.

When we step out in faith, commit to a life of prayer, and keep our hearts right before Him, that’s when mountains begin to move.

So today, I challenge you—pray bold prayers. Believe God for the impossible. And trust that no matter how big the mountain seems, God is bigger. Because with Him, nothing shall be impossible.
