Wednesday - Walking in the Fear of God

Nehemiah 5:8–9 –“And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer. 9 Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?”

Nehemiah could have stopped at "you broke the law." Instead he put his finger on the real issue: the fear of God.

The fear of God isn't terror. It's reverence. It's awe. It's taking God seriously and remembering He is the highest authority in the room. These men had been measuring everything by what the king would allow. Nehemiah reminded them there's a higher court — a King above the king who sees what no law can see.

-              The law asks, "What can I get away with?"

-              Grace asks, "What honors my God?"

To walk in the fear of God is to let the awareness of Him, not the limits of the law, decide how you treat your brother.

Reflect: Would you treat people differently if you truly believed God was in the room? He is.
