Tuesday - Separate from the World

1 John 2:15 — "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him."

John doesn't soften it: we can't love the world and love the Father at the same time. Whatever has our heart will shape how we live, and our children are watching what we love.

That's why God calls His people to be different. He has given us an entirely different playbook: His Word. The world doesn't live by this Book, and many hate it. Our job is to teach our children to live by the Word, not the world.

If you're a child of God, this world isn't your home. "For our conversation is in heaven" (Philippians 3:20). Years ago my family hosted a foreign exchange student from Slovakia named Peter. Everything he did was different. Citizens of another country stand out, and so should we: in how we talk, how we spend our time, and how we treat others.

But you can't hand your children a life you aren't living. Before asking your kids to be different from the world, take an honest look at your own heart. What would your kids say you love most?
