Tuesday - Stand Up for the Word

Read: Nehemiah 8:5-6

Key Verse: "And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up." (Nehemiah 8:5)

Watch the progression of reverence in these verses. They gathered for the Word. They asked for the Word. They listened to the Word. Then, when Ezra opened it, they stood for the Word. And before long they lifted their hands, bowed their heads, and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground.

When the Book opened, the people bowed. Reverence for the Word led them straight to worship, because you cannot separate the Word of God from the God of the Word. How you treat this Book reveals what you believe about its Author.

Why all the fuss? Because this is no ordinary book. "All scripture is given by inspiration of God" (II Timothy 3:16), and that word "inspiration" literally means God-breathed. When you open your Bible, you are not reading dead ink on a page. You are breathing in the very breath of Almighty God.

Reverence is not about the posture of your body. It's about the posture of your heart. But here's the truth: a casual approach to the Bible will produce a casual Christian. A reverent approach opens the door for revival.
