Wednesday - Separated Unto God

Deuteronomy 6:5 — "And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might."

God's greatest command isn't a list of things to avoid. It's a call to love Him with everything we are. That love is the reason we live differently.

It's possible to be separate from the world and still not be close to God. The Pharisees proved it. Their name likely comes from a word meaning "separated," and they kept every rule they could find. Yet Jesus said their hearts were far from Him. Separation had become their goal instead of their path.

Our kids need to know why we live the way we do. As a kid, I asked "Why?" constantly, and the answer was usually "Because I told you so." But "because I said so" Christianity won't bring a child close to God. It may produce rule-keepers for a while, but not hearts that love the Lord.

So explain the why. Tell your children you don't avoid certain things to look better than others, but because you love Jesus and don't want anything to come between you and Him.

Think about the standards in your home. Can you explain them in a way that points your child to God's heart?
