“Have any of you ever felt “The Peace of God which surpasses all understanding?” (Philippians 4:7) The Lord provided this for me almost 20 years ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday.
April 16, 2005 was a beautiful spring day. The temperature was in. the 70s. the sky was clear, and the sun was shining brightly. My sister-in-law, Debbie, was in the ICU at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. My daughter, Shannon, and I decided to go to Omaha for the day to see her, my brother Kirk, and their 7-year-old twins Nels and Noel. After the hospital visit, the twins had a soccer game that we went to watch. Kirk wanted to go back to the hospital to be with Debbie after the game, so Shannon and I said that we would keep the twins for a few hours to give him a break.
We decided to go out to eat lunch and do some shopping. At 4:32pm, while browsing in a shoe store, I received a phone call from my dad. He said that Brian had been in a horrible tractor roll-over accident. He was currently being flown by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. The blood drained straight from head to my toes, I asked my dad numerous times if Brian was alive. He said that he did not know. I kept saying over and over, “Oh, my God!” Shannon kept asking, “What’s wrong?!” I gathered the twins and Shannon as fast as I could and we ran to the car. Once in the car, I began crying uncontrollably and shaking. I told Shannon what I knew, then began driving back to UNMC to drop the twins off with Kirk. I then quit crying and got angry. I was angry and mad at God. I kept saying, over and over, “I do not want to plan my husband’s funeral!!” I’m sure I repeated this for close to 10 minutes while driving. My knuckles were white on the steering wheel. Oh, I was so mad, sad, and scared.
All of a sudden, as I was still driving across Omaha on Dodge Street, I felt a supernatural calmness come over me. I was blanketed with a “peace which surpasses all understanding” over my thoughts. I felt and knew that no matter what, the Lord would be with me and my kids—always. If I did have to plan Brian’s funeral and learn to live without him, that I would be okay. The Lord would hold my hand and keep me safe in His arms. My whole demeanor changed in that split second and I was no longer angry with God. I even began thinking who Brian’s pall bearers at his funeral could be! The Lord kept Shannon and I safe as I drove as quickly as I could to Sioux City. My car was on empty, but He got us there!
Brian was alive, still in the ER with a crushed hip socket. He had no internal or head injuries. What an answer to the many prayers said for him. God continued to show His sovereignty and give me peace each step of the way as we went to Minneapolis for surgery on Brian’s hip, as Brian was on crutches for 4 months and off of work for over 8 months, and as I worked extra overtime hours and often went without sleep. He was with us this whole time providing comfort and peace in my thoughts, actions, and prayers through this whole ordeal. The Lord showed me His peace in a very personal way. He kept my whole family in His arms, covering us with His love, as He still does to this day.”
Thank you, Melia for sharing such a touching testimony of God's peace! What story has God given you to tell?

Faithful Foundations
In 1870, Mrs. William Tremaine organized a Baptist Sunday school in the Ross schoolhouse, three miles north of Akron near LeRoy in Dakota Territory. Its first superintendent was Mrs. Schooler. On March 20, 1871, Reverend George Freeman, Agent General of the American Baptist Home Missions Society, on his way from Elk Point to Sioux Falls preached “according to appointment” in the Ross school. This was the first sermon by a Baptist clergyman in the Sioux Valley. So much interest was manifested that Freeman remained the rest of the week and the First Baptist Church of LeRoy, Dakota Territory was organized with 11 charter members on Saturday, March 25, 1871.
On the following day, a number of converts were baptized in the nearby Big Sioux river, and the first communion was administered. The charter members of the church were J. T. Gore, Miss M. D. Tremaine, G. W. Waterbury, David Waterbury, G. W. Bonney, Mrs. L. R. Lillibridge, Mrs. R. Lillibridge, J. Tremaine, Mrs. C. A. Tremaine, Mrs. C. Tremaine, and Mrs. M. Gore. (From Akron History Book)
When Mrs. Tremaine took it upon herself to provide biblical education to the children in her community, only God could have foreseen the lasting impact of her faithfulness. Nearly 155 years later, we’re excited to announce that Sunday School will be resuming on Sunday, March 1. The church was founded on the foundation of gospel preaching, and as Hebrews reminds us, "the Word of God is alive and powerful." This truth was evident when Mr. Freeman, moved by the community's enthusiastic response, was led to preach for an entire week.
The themes of faith and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit are woven through the lives of Mrs. Tremaine, Mr. Freeman, and the 11 charter members of First Baptist Church. While much has changed in the past 155 years, the power of God’s Word continues to be at work in our church today.
Missions Moment
Teen Bible Study is a community Bible study that is held each Wednesday morning at 6:30 throughout the school year! All teenagers are welcome! We are grateful to The Spot for their partnership in this ministry! This school year, the attendance has grown to 40-50 students weekly! Through the generosity of local individuals, churches, and groups, each teen who attends is able to receive one free small drink each week. With the number of students that attend, funds are always needed! Consider donating today or donate an extra buck the next time you enjoy The Spot!
Support for California Churches
As we lift up prayers for the residents of California facing the devastation of wildfires, many in our congregation have been seeking ways to offer additional support. During January’s business meeting, it was decided to send $1,000 to assist our brothers and sisters in Christ in California. These funds have been sent to Lancaster Baptist Church, located outside of L. A., which is actively coordinating relief efforts for churches and families affected by the fires.
Resource of the Month
Keith and Kristen Getty are a musical couple whose influence in modern hymn writing reaches our church on some Sunday mornings. The family features a monthly hymn to learn and sing together on their website. The features include song lyrics, story behind the song, Scripture, and more! Check it out at gettymusic.com/hymnofthemonth.
What's New?

This addition will provide more space for everyone. You can start using it right away! Please remember to drive safely when entering, exiting, and parking.
A New Face & Role
Akron FBC is excited to welcome a new face this summer! Logan Yoder, a senior at Heartland Baptist Bible College in Oklahoma City, will be joining us after he graduates in May with a Bachelor’s in Pastoral Administration. During January’s business meeting, the church voted to offer Logan a 3-month internship in both the youth pastor and administrative pastor roles—positions that are vital as our youth ministries and church continue to grow.
Pastor Michael was introduced to Logan through Pastor Ivan Yoder of Brookings, South Dakota, who is Logan’s uncle. Logan comes highly recommended by pastors and college leadership alike. We are thrilled to have him join us this summer and look forward to the ways God will use him in our church!
Sunday School
There has been a growing interest in resuming Sunday school here at Akron FBC! The Lord's hand has been evident, and members are currently at work to launch a Sunday school ministry for all ages on Sunday, March 2! Stay tuned for more details!
Newsletter
As our church family has grown, ministries have expanded, and plans for improvement, it can feel challenging to keep up with it all. In 2025, Akron FBC will provide a monthly newsletter to help streamline communication for all things regarding the church. The prayer is that this resource will be encouraging, enlightening, and inspiring. Come along as this ministry progresses and thank you for being such a vital part of God's work in this local church!
Past Events
Senior Breakfast
On Saturday, January 25, Akron FBC hosted a Senior Breakfast in the fellowship hall, where a dozen seniors gathered to enjoy delicious food and even sweeter fellowship. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and breakfast filled the air, while laughter and conversation echoed throughout the room. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, so be on the lookout for more senior events coming soon!
Volunteer Fair
A Ministry Volunteer Fair was held on Sunday, January 26, and again before the worship service on Sunday, February 2. Participants had the opportunity to walk through the fellowship hall, where various ministry teams and volunteer opportunities were on display. The fair featured sign-up tables for a range of ministries, including cleaning, VBS, the fundraising team, the worship music team, and more. A dedicated section allowed participants to share ideas for future teams and ministries.
Throughout the event, an emphasis was placed on the body of Christ, unity, and the call to serve in love, as we are instructed in 1 Corinthians 12 and 13. It’s a beautiful reminder that the church is not a building, but the people—each of you, using your unique gifts to further the gospel in countless ways.
