When God Builds the Home

This Mother’s Day, I’ve been thinking a lot about families. About parenting. About the chaos and the calling that come with raising kids and building a home. And I want to share a Psalm that has gripped my heart lately—Psalm 127.
Psalm 127 - Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. 2 It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep. 3 Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. 4 As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. 5 Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate."
Psalm 127 isn’t just a passage to read—it’s a song families used to sing together on their way to worship. It’s personal. It’s powerful. And it’s packed with truth for our families today.
Picture it: families walking hand in hand, kids laughing, parents singing, hearts focused on the Lord. That’s the setting for this Psalm—and the message it carries is just as relevant now as it was then.
In just five verses, God gives us a blueprint for building a strong, faith-filled home. And on this special day, I want to highlight three truths from Psalm 127 that every family needs to hear.

The Foundation Comes First
Psalm 127:1 - “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it…”
That’s a powerful reminder. Raising a family is hard work. There are late nights, loud mornings, and more than a few moments where it feels like you’re barely hanging on. But here’s the encouragement—God never asked you to figure it all out by yourself.
He doesn’t expect perfection—He offers partnership.
God isn’t looking for flawless families. He’s looking for faithful hearts. And when He’s the foundation of your home, you don’t carry the weight alone.
This verse isn’t about discouragement. It’s about dependence. It’s not saying your effort doesn’t matter—it’s saying your effort needs Him at the center. You can have the best systems, routines, and intentions, but if the Lord isn’t holding it together, it won’t last.
It’s like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Tourists come from all over the world to see it—but really, it’s just a monument to a failed foundation. It looked fine at first, but the flaws showed up over time.
The same thing can happen in our families. We can look great on the outside—busy schedules, picture-perfect social media posts, well-dressed kids—but if the unseen foundation is weak, the cracks will eventually show.
God doesn’t want to just be part of your home. He wants to be the foundation. The steady base everything else is built on.
So let me ask you—what is your home really built on today?
Those things change. They shift with the seasons. But when your home is built on the Lord, it’s built on something unshakable.

- Is it built on school activities?

The Fruit is a Gift
Psalm 127:3 - “Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.”
Let that sink in for a moment. Children aren’t a burden—they’re a blessing. They’re not an interruption to your life—they’re an incredible gift from the hands of God.
Now I know it doesn’t always feel that way. Diaper blowouts don’t feel like blessings. Teenage attitudes don’t feel like a reward. Sleepless nights don’t exactly scream “heritage of the Lord.”
But they are. God says they are.
And that’s so important to remember, especially in a culture that often treats children like inconveniences. Our world might say, “Delay parenting. Skip the family. Focus on yourself.” But God says the exact opposite—children are a gift. A reward. A blessing entrusted to your care.
Outside of your relationship with Jesus, your family may be the greatest gift God has given you.
And it goes fast, doesn’t it? You blink and they’re crawling. Blink again and they’re walking. Then talking. Then driving. It all happens so quickly.
Don’t miss it. Don’t miss what matters most.
The best thing you can do as a mom—or a dad—is point your kids to Jesus. Let them hear you pray. Let them see you open your Bible. Teach them God’s Word. Do devotions before bed. Show them what faith looks like in real life.
Because more than anything else, they need Him.

The Future is Bright
Psalm 127:4 - “As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.”
That is some powerful imagery. Arrows weren’t just decorations—they were weapons of purpose. They were shaped, sharpened, and sent into battle.
That’s what our kids are. Not ornaments to keep in the quiver, but arrows to prepare and release. We’re not just raising children. We’re shaping the next generation. And our job isn’t just to protect them—it’s to prepare them.
Because they’re not here to simply survive this culture—they’re here to change it.
Psalm 127:5 - “Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.”
That last line is huge. In ancient times, the gate was the place of leadership and influence. It was where big decisions were made—and where enemies would show up to challenge them.
This verse is saying that children raised in truth will stand strong in those moments. They’ll speak boldly for what is right. They won’t cower in fear—they’ll engage the culture with confidence.
That’s the future of a God-built home. A family that shapes the world instead of being shaped by it.

So what does this mean for us today?
It means your family matters more than ever.
Your role as a parent, or grandparent, is vital.
The time to step up is now.
Don’t let the darkness of the world discourage you. God is still building families that shine.
If we build our homes on His truth… if we love, teach, and send out our kids with purpose… we don’t have to fear the future.
We can face it with faith.
I recently came across a quote that stopped me in my tracks. It said:
So moms—thank you.
Thank you for loving fiercely. For showing up faithfully. For doing the hard work even when no one sees it.
Keep building. Keep praying. Keep pointing your kids to Jesus.
And remember—when God builds the house, it lasts.
Happy Mother’s Day.
