Wednesday - Making Much of God

Psalm 34:3 – “O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.”
Luke 1:46-55 – “And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed forever.”
Mary opens her song with a powerful statement: “My soul doth magnify the Lord.” That word magnify doesn’t mean she made God bigger. It means she made much of Him.
And when you read her song, it’s obvious who the focus is. God. Over and over again. Seventeen times in just a few verses.
Mary didn’t magnify her situation. She didn’t magnify her fear or confusion. She magnified the Lord.
That’s a challenge for us, especially during the holidays. It’s easy to magnify stress, schedules, finances, or expectations. But Mary shows us another way.
When God is at the center, everything else finds its proper place.
